  19.     In a phew philes on this system some
  20.  of the recipes need a still, well here
  21.  is how to make a still:
  22.  
  23.     Once you get the chemicals, ingred
  24.  ients, or what ever, you set up your
  25.  still. It is small, efficient, and
  26.  safe. In it you can make things like
  27.  tear gas, prussic acide and occasionaly
  28.  distill some alcohol.
  29.  
  30.     First, a flask is fitted with a
  31.  one-holw rubber stopper. A short length
  32.  of thin glass tubing is inserted into
  33.  the hole. A five foot length of thin
  34.  rubber tubing is fitted over the glass
  35.  tube and coiled into the ice bucket and
  36.  out through a hole near the bottom. The
  37.  end of the tube is fitted over another
  38.  glass tube which is in a two-hole stopp
  39.  er stuck into a bottle. The other hole
  40.  contains another glass tube to which is
  41.  attached another length of tubing long
  42.  enougb to reach outside to get rid of
  43.  any noxious or poisonous fumes.
  44.  
  45.     The equipment for a still is cheap
  46.  and simple to get. Most of it can be
  47.  bought from your local drug store.
  48.  They carry tubing, stoppers, glassware
  49.  and many chemicals which they freely
  50.  sell to doctors, students etc. If you
  51.  get on good terms with your druggist
  52.  and he doesn't know you are crazy you
  53.  can buy most of your stuph from him.
  54.  
  55.     A ring stand or tripod for the flask
  56.  is more handy than the can in the
  57.  illustration (see below). But a tin can
  58.  with strips cut out of it for ventilat
  59.  ion and for the removal of the lamp is
  60.  usually adequate.
  61.  
  62.  CHECKLIST OF EQUIPMENT:
  63.  
  64.  <1> alcohol lamp.
  65.  <2> ring stand, tripod or tin can.
  66.  <3> 500 ml or larger flask
  67.  <4> assortment of one and two-hole
  68.      holeless rubber stoppers of various
  69.      sizes.
  70.  <5> about six yards of 3/16 of an inch
  71.      (inside diameter) rubber tubing.
  72.  <6> about a foot of six millimeter
  73.      (outside diameter) laboratory glass
  74.      tubin.
  75.  <7> child's plastic bucket
  76.  <8> receiving bottle.

  79.    The hole in the bucket for the tube
  80.  is made somewhat smaller than the tube
  81.  so it will fit snugly and prevent
  82.  leakage. Full strength wood alcohol for
  83.  the lamp can be bought at the drug stor
  84.  e. Rubbing alcohol, although 30% water
  85.  will burn in the lamp but not so well.
  86.  You can distill the purt alcohol off
  87.  the water from rubbing alcohol.

  89.     This is best done over a gas or
  90.  electric stove. First a large pan with
  91.  a couple of inches of water in it is
  92.  put on the burner to be used and the
  93.  others are turned off.

  95.     The still is set up as the illustra
  96.  tion except the receiving bottle is
  97.  larger and doesn't need a stopper or
  98.  tube going outside. The flask is filled
  99.  with rubbing alcohol to just under the
  100.  neck and set in teh pan of boiling
  101.  water.
  102.  
  103.     In this setup a coathanger wire
  104.  with a loop in its middle is put over
  105.  the neck of the flask and fixed on the
  106.  sides of the pan. This is necessary
  107.  because as the alcohol distills off,
  108.  the flask gets lighter andb would rise
  109.  in the water and fall over without
  110.  support.
  111.  
  112.     Another consideration is to make
  113.  sure the tube does not flop over and
  114.  collapse. This can be prevented by
  115.  hanging a string from the ceiling by
  116.  which the tubing is held above the
  117.  flask.

  119.     The tubing should be further support
  120.  ed so it does not touch the hot edge
  121.  of the pan. If it is allowed to lie
  122.  over the edge it will melt.
  123.  
  124.     When the action starts the alcohol
  125.  will fairly flow into the collecting
  126.  bottle. When it stops all that is left
  127.  in the flask will be water. If left
  128.  alone water would start dripping, much
  129.  slower than the alcohol, but this is
  130.  not wanted.

  132.     This is the only case where you
  133.  should distill over a stove. A stove
  134.  is harder to control than an alcohol
  135.  lamp. It is also harder to clean up
  136.  than a table in case of an accident.
